Webinar #1: February 29, 2012 at 2:00 PM EST

From Pushcarts to Real Estate: Creating Opportunities for Earned Income

City park managers are increasingly looking to commercial activity to generate revenue for park operations. Examples range from restaurants and cafes to facility rentals. If you’re starting out, how do you develop a strategy? What are the best models for commercial activities in parks of different sizes, from destination parks to neighborhood parks? What should an agreement between the park agency and vendor include? How can you take maximum advantage of on-site facilities? This webinar will provide an overview from the perspective of a consultant, a public agency and a non-profit organization.

Speakers:

  • Jamie Springer, Partner, HR&A Advisors, Inc. (New York, NY)
  • Michael Boland, Chief of Planning and Park Projects, The Presidio Trust (San Francisco, CA)
  • Betsy Smith, Assistant Commissioner for Revenue and Marketing, New York City Department of Parks & Recreation (New York, NY)

Webinar #2: May 9, 2012 at 1:00 PM EDT

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design, Programming and Partnerships

One barrier to park use is park safety – perceived or actual.  How can parks organizations and community stewards develop an integrated strategy with the community to make their parks safer using design tools, partnerships with law enforcement agencies and programming? This webinar will provide practical examples for increasing safety and creative ways to use existing neighborhood assets to create safer parks.

Speakers:

  • Yvette Bowden, Piedmont Park Conservancy (Atlanta, GA)
  • Kelly Pack, Director of Trail Development, Rails to Trails Conservancy (Washington, DC)
  • Art Hushen, President, National Institute of Crime Prevention (Simpsonville, SC)

Webinar #3: October 17, 2012 at 2:00 PM EDT

Working with Corporate Teams to Build a Volunteer Base

Many parks groups are turning to the business community to find volunteers and build a broader base of support.  How do you find corporate partners? What do corporate partners want and how do you design programs to meet their needs?  What can a parks organization expect from a volunteer work day?   This webinar will explore corporate partnerships from several perspectives, including a volunteer clearinghouse, a corporate giving manager and a non-profit that has worked successfully with corporate partners.

Speakers:

  • Scott Smith, Associate Director of Development, Hands-On Atlanta (Atlanta, GA)
  • David Jayo, Corporate Giving Manager, REI (Kent, WA)
  • Denise Shea, Director, Volunteer Programs and Ben Harwood, Director of Foundation & Corporate Support, Golden Gate National Park Conservancy (San Francisco, CA)
