Hotline to Funding Call #7: Connecting National Parks to Urban Communities

Print
City Parks Alliance members are invited to join a FREE conference call, the seventh in a series on obtaining funding for parks maintenance, programming, development and restoration.

Date: Tuesday, September 28, 2010

Time: 1:00 – 2:15 p.m. (EDT)

Speaker:  Mickey Fearn, Deputy Director for Communications and Community Assistance, National Park Service

Topic:  More than 150 national park sites are within a 50-mile radius of a city of 100,000 or larger.  This is nearly half of all parks in the National Park System.  Close-to-home parks provide an excellent opportunity as training grounds for environmental stewardship and leadership among young people living in cities.  This knowledge can then be transferred to management and stewardship of our national parks.  Join us for a call to discuss opportunities to link urban communities with the national park system through trails and greenways, youth education, ranger programs and collaborative programming with park and recreation agencies/organizations.  Mr. Fearn will also discuss the Department of Interior’s America’s Great Outdoors Initiative.

Mickey Fearn focuses on outreach and communications to groups currently underrepresented in parks.  He comes to the National Park Service from Seattle, Washington, where he created and directed a summer youth program for Seattle Parks and Recreation aimed at connecting urban youths to the natural world while promoting personal responsibility and healthy lifestyles.

In Seattle, Mickey held positions as the manager of the City of Seattle’s Race and Social Justice Initiative, director of the City’s Innovation Project and director of Seattle’s Neighborhood Leadership Program. Mickey also served as a Washington State Parks and Recreation commissioner for 12 years. Prior to his work in Seattle, Mickey Fearn worked for the governor of California, the California Department of Parks and Recreation, and the mayor of Oakland, California.
