City Parks Alliance is pleased to announce the election of three new members to its Board of Directors: David Jayo, Corporate Giving Manager, REI, Sumner, WA; Charlie McCabe, Executive Director, Austin Parks Foundation, Austin, TX; and Eric Tamulonis, Principal, Wallace Roberts & Todd, Philadelphia, PA.
David Jayo is the Corporate Giving Manager of Recreational Equipment Inc. (REI), a national retail cooperative with more than four million active members, providing quality outdoor gear and clothing through 114 retail locations and its award-winning website, REI.com. In his 12 years with REI, Jayo has overseen a grants program that has awarded more than $30 million and introduced an employee-driven grant-making program. In recognition of the involvement of REI employees in the company’s stewardship programs, REI was named the recipient of the Great Places to Work Pride Award in 2007.
Charlie McCabe serves as the Executive Director of the Austin Parks Foundation. Since June 2005, he has worked with a small staff and volunteer Board of Directors to expand the efforts of the foundation to implement improvements to the City of Austin’s park lands and facilities through park grants, volunteer events and fundraising efforts. Over 94 community groups work with the foundation and the parks department to maintain and improve Austin area parks and trails. Since 2007 the Austin Parks Foundation has helped fund $2.7 million in direct improvements to Zilker Park, site of the annual Austin City Limits Music Festival. Additionally, the foundation has funded $2 million in grants for hundreds of park improvement projects in Austin area parks.
Over a 30-year career as a landscape architect, Eric Tamulonis, principal at Wallace Roberts & Todd, has primarily devoted himself to the planning and design of public open space and campuses. Tamulonis’ wide ranging park and open space assignments provide him with perspective on the state of park design in the United States. Projects across the country have included city wide open space master plans (Trenton, NJ), planning for major established parks (Houston’s Memorial Park), significant new “mega parks” (The Parklands of Floyds Fork, Louisville, KY, and Red Mountain Park, Birmingham, AL) and new urban hybrid parks (New Jersey Capital Park.)
